The Chicago Boys and Girls Club is an after-school program that keeps young people off the streets and provides an opportunity to get involved in constructive activities. Before the recent introduction of a volleyball program to the Yancey Center at 6245 S. Wabash Ave., there were not a lot of activities for girls. Since the addition of volleyball, there has been a faithful showing of girls ages 11-18 eager to learn about the sport.

DePaul head coach Nadia Edwards and assistant coaches Marie Zidek and Phuong Luong conducted a two-hour clinic on May 17th teaching the basic skills while Blue Demon players Ally Rooks, Natalie Rizzo and Amy Lanski demonstrated techniques and interacted with the young ladies. Each participant received a DePaul volleyball T-shirt.

"Just like all of our players at DePaul, these young ladies have developed a passion for volleyball," Edwards said. "Most of our players can reflect that at some point in their career, someone invested time to teach them the sport and help them cultivate a love for the game.  This was our chance to give back to the community and provide some of the opportunities that many of us had growing up.

We look forward to returning for more clinics and building our relationship with the Yancey Boys and Girls Club. We also would like to give the young ladies from the clinic a chance to visit DePaul University's campus and attend a few of our matches in the fall."

DePaul sponsored a basketball fundamentals clinic for 50 elementary school aged children on May 12th at McGrath-Phillips Arena located on DePaul's Lincoln Park campus. All participants received three hours of instruction and game experience from the DePaul men's and women's basketball coaching staffs and current student-athletes.

Hello women's basketball fans! Happy spring!

It's been quite a while since I've written and we have a lot to catch up on! As you all know, our season ended in the second round of the NCAA tournament with a loss to Tennessee. Losses are always hard and they are especially hard when it's the end of the season and you are losing a great group of seniors. Even though three of our seniors couldn't play this year due to injury, they were still a fantastic group that I'm so happy to have gotten to know. I'm going to miss them for sure!

The women's basketball team went to the Northwest Side Housing Center with a group of about 20 people from DePaul to help clean up a neighborhood. Among the many duties were cleaning up the garbage, raking leaves, mowing the lawn, cutting shrubs and picking weeds.

Earlier this week, DePaul hosted a group of Tiger Cub Scouts from the Lincoln Park neighborhood and met with Dave Corzine for a tour of the Sullivan Athletics Center before joining Mac Calloway and men's basketball player Jamee Crockett for some fitness and basketball drills.
