Women's Basketball Blog: Kelsey Smith

Hey there, Blue Demon Fans!

This is Kelsey Smith, and I'm excited to be reporting to all of you for the first time! Although it hasn't been that long since Jasmine's last blog post, there is quite a bit to fill you in on - so get ready!

First, and probably most exciting, is that we have officially begun practice! Our first practice was on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 8:30 a.m. - talk about early! In spite of the fact that most of the team are not exactly "morning people," everyone was super energetic and peppy (which obviously Coach Bruno appreciated). One of his infamous quotes is that, despite how early it is, or what is going on in your life, you should "wake up every morning with a smile on your face and show the world you're beautiful." I think that it's safe to say that the team was able to put a smile on his face after a great practice.

A few days prior to our first practice, Kelsey Reynolds, Megan Rogowski and I were lucky enough to attend a BIG EAST luncheon honoring the new conference commissioner, Val Ackerman. For any of you who haven't heard of Val, she is a pretty powerful woman. She was the first-ever commissioner of the WNBA, and has a ton of experience with other organizations like the NBA and USA Basketball. She spoke to us about how excited she is for the new conference and the awesome television contract recently inked with Fox Sports--which means that anytime fans aren't able to make it to the games, there is a good chance that you'll be able to catch us on TV! One of the highlights of the luncheon (besides the delicious food: Maggianos, yum!) was having the opportunity to chat with Val, along with Kelsey and Megan. For someone who is such a big deal, Val was incredibly humble and offered some great advice to the three of us.

We also did a little bit of team bonding this week, and cooked a team meal on one of our "off days." Britt, Megan Rogowski, Megan Podkowa, and Brooke hosted the get-together in their room, and each of the other rooms brought a dish. The freshmen were responsible for appetizers and drinks, and brought spinach dip, potato skins, and garlic bread. Centrese, Chanise, and Brandi took care of all of the meat and brought shrimp and Italian sausage. The host room made two different sauces: alfredo and marinara meat sauce. Jasmine, Kelsey and I brought a fairly eclectic mix of items: noodles (Kelsey made 4 boxes!!), salad, and dessert. One of our managers, Nori, is notorious for the treats that she makes, and brought brownies that were still warm from the oven! Needless to say, we all left with extremely full bellies.

Can't wait to see you all at a game soon!

Go Blue!

Kelsey Smith, #54
