June 9, 2017

CHICAGO - DePaul Blue Demon senior student-athletes gathered at the annual graduation luncheon hosted by Director of Athletics Jean Lenti Ponsetto last Friday in the Sullivan Athletic Center as a kickoff to DePaul University's Commencement Weekend.

The Blue Demons were resplendent in their bright red graduation stoles. They are the fifth class of DePaul student-athletes to participate in the university's graduation ceremony wearing the sharp-looking red sash with the university insignia on one side and the athletic department insignia on the other.

This illustrious class of seniors capped off an amazing four-year run by leading DePaul teams to six conference titles---the most in school history.

Men’s track and field claimed its first indoor and outdoor championships while softball and women’s tennis won their respective BIG EAST tournaments. Women’s basketball and women’s soccer earned regular-season titles.

Women’s basketball, women’s tennis and softball advanced to the NCAA tournament, and thrower Trevor Kintyhtt capped off a spectacular track and field season by qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

During their four years in Lincoln Park, the seniors brought home a total of 21 BIG EAST titles and 60 individual conference championships. A DePaul team competed in the NCAA tournament 12 times and 10 individuals qualified for NCAA nationals.

In that span, DePaul won 54 major BIG EAST awards and had 11 All-Americans and 18 Academic All-Americans. Women’s basketball forward Meri Bennett-Swanson was recognized at the May 15 Honors Convocation with the Political Science Department Outstanding Senior award.

These outstanding student-athletes took photos in their caps and gowns while officially joining DePaul's Athletic Alumni D-Club. Ponsetto expressed her thanks for their dedication and sacrifice the last four years and for bringing such honor and distinction to the university.

DePaul officially begins its commencement activities Friday with a Baccalaureate Mass at St. Vincent dePaul Church.
