Ex-DePaul Star Simmons Among Graduating Seniors Honored on Friday
June 13, 2014
CHICAGO - DePaul Blue Demon senior student-athletes gathered at a luncheon hosted by Director of Athletics Jean Lenti Ponsetto on Friday afternoon as a kickoff to DePaul University's Commencement Weekend.
The Blue Demons were resplendent in their bright red graduation stoles. They will be the second class of DePaul student-athletes to participate in the university's graduation ceremony wearing the sharp-looking red sash with the university insignia on one side and the athletic department insignia on the other.
There were more than 30 graduating seniors along with coaches and athletic department staff who enjoyed the gathering. Prominent among the graduates was former DePaul basketball star Bobby Simmons who returned to finish his degree in Communications after a 10-year career in the NBA.
"This goes to show that you can always come back home and be welcomed with open arms," Ponsetto said about Simmons. "He made a promise to his mom and family that he would get his college degree, and after a long career in the NBA, he is graduating on Sunday.
"We are all so proud of Bobby Simmons."
The student-athletes took photos in their caps and gowns while officially joining DePaul's Athletic Alumni D-Club.
DePaul officially begins its commencement activities at 4 p.m. on Friday with a Baccalaureate Mass at St. Vincent DePaul Church, 1010 W. Webster Ave.
A Commencement Weekend Kickoff Party follows on the Lincoln Park Campus Quad.
On Saturday, students from the College of Education, School of Music and Theater and the School for New Learning will receive their diplomas at the Rosemont Theatre.
