Seven DePaul Programs Earn BIG EAST Team Academic Awards
CHICAGO – DePaul led the way with seven teams claiming BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Awards announced by the league on Tuesday. The Blue Demons claimed the top team grade-point average for women’s basketball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s tennis, men’s indoor track and field and men’s outdoor track and field.
The BIG EAST Conference honored 23 teams with 2008-09 Team Academic Excellence Awards recognizing the highest collective grade-point averages in each conference sport.
Ten BIG EAST schools had at least one team honored, with DePaul finishing with a conference-best seven teams recognized. Notre Dame, Seton Hall and Syracuse had three teams honored, while Cincinnati and St. John’s had two, and Georgetown, Louisville, USF and West Virginia had one each.
DePaul’s women’s basketball, women’s cross country, men’s soccer and women’s tennis teams were repeat winners. The women’s basketball team made its seventh straight NCAA Tournament appearance this season while men’s soccer reached the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament for the second straight year, and women’s tennis was runner-up at the BIG EAST Championships in May.
The winning teams included Notre Dame’s women’s tennis and men’s swimming and diving teams –which captured BIG EAST championships in 2008-09. Louisville’s field hockey team, which won a share of the 2008 regular-season title, was also among the honored teams.
The winners were chosen based on the 2008-09 grade-point average of each student-athlete who appears on an institution’s squad list in a particular sport.
