DePaul Events to Hold Moment of Silence For Myles Brand This Weekend
CHICAGO - Prior to all of DePaul's home athletic events this weekend a moment of silence will be observed in memory of NCAA President Myles Brand, who lost a 10-month battle to pancreatic cancer yesterday. DePaul athletics director Jean Lenti Ponsetto worked with Brand on many NCAA student-athlete initiatives and reflected on his leadership. "I had the great privilege and honor to serve under Myles' leadership in several capacities, while as Chair of the Division I Championships Cabinet when he first came on board and later when appointed to serve on ad hoc committees for Women's Basketball and the Men's Basketball Academic Enhancement Committee. His passion for academic reform and student-athlete welfare issues was as dynamic and fierce as the competitiveness of a world class athlete. From the first Championships Cabinet meeting he attended to Management Council and the culminating Board meetings where budget matters were decided, his support of student-athlete success academically and athletically was unwavering, especially for those issues that provided greater access and opportunity for women and minorities. The real measure of his leadership and commitment will be felt for generations." A busy weekend of DePaul athletics events in Lincoln Park opens on Friday afternoon as the men's soccer team opens BIG EAST play against Notre Dame at 4 p.m. on Wish Field. The volleyball team hosts the DePaul Invitational at McGrath Arena on Friday and Saturday. The Blue Demons face Eastern Michigan on Friday at 7:30 p.m. before taking on Western Kentucky at 12:30 p.m. and Sacramento State at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The weekend concludes on Sunday with a soccer doubleheader at Wish Field starting at 1 p.m. with the women's soccer team battling Illinois State before the men's soccer team hosts Marquette at 4 p.m.
