Blue Demon Captains Elect 2013-14 Leadership
Oct. 8, 2013
CHICAGO - The DePaul athletics department announced its 2013-14 Captains' Council officers on Tuesday. The four student-athletes selected will serve as the representational body for their peers.
The Captains' Council is a student organization comprised of captains from each of DePaul's 15 intercollegiate athletics programs. The group works with the athletics department administration on a variety of issues and events. All officers are selected by their peers.
A senior on the men's basketball team, Edwind McGhee (pictured left) was chosen as the council's president for this year after serving in the vice president role during the 2012-13 academic year.
"Edwind has proven to be a great leader, both on the court and in the classroom," said men's basketball head coach Oliver Purnell. "I know that he will do a remarkable job as President of Captain's Council."
"This is a well-earned vote of respect for Ed from his peers," added Associate Athletic Director Kathryn Statz. "His contribution to the group was valued last year and I am looking forward to the fact that Ed is ready to embrace this opportunity."
Kirsten Verdun (pictured right), a senior pitcher on the softball team, joins the council as vice president in her first year as a captain.
"In my view, it speaks to Kirsten's leadership potential that she was the overwhelming choice for vice president having not been an official captain until this year," said Statz. "KV speaks her mind and that is what we need among our Council."
In the secretary role will be junior track & field thrower Alexandra Vekich (pictured left).
"I think Alex realizes where she falls in a long line of well-respected women throwers at DePaul, who impacted Captains' Council in a positive way," said Statz. "We're thrilled to have her in a leadership position well before she is at the end of her career."
Rounding out the group will be senior golfer Moritz Ackerhans (pictured right), who was voted to the treasurer position.
"We are going to count on Moritz to keep the Captains' Council on track with the goals that our athletic director made clear to the Council at the start of the year," said Statz. "Moritz is a quiet but powerful leader."
Captains' Council, among its many duties, serves as a formal forum for DePaul University student-athletes and as a voice for all student-athletes in the athletics department. It ensures that all student-athletes remain integrated with the campus community, follows and upholds the Vincentian beliefs of DePaul University and develops service initiatives that represent the values of DePaul.
