Services for wife of former DePaul AD Gene Sullivan to be Sunday and Monday in Mount Prospect
Oct. 12, 2013
CHICAGO - DePaul athletics recently learned the passing of Elaine Sullivan, the wife of former athletics director Gene Sullivan and a friend to many in the University community. DePaul's athletics department is housed in the Sullivan Athletics Center on the Lincoln Park.
Elaine was by Gene's side every step of the way and loved DePaul and their time here. She devoted her life to raising countless student-athletes as an AD's and coach's partner along with raising their two wonderful daughters, Tracy and Terri. Terri is now the head women's softball coach at the University of Illinois. Elaine was highly influential and supportive of our efforts to raise funds to name the Sullivan Athletic Center in Gene's honor from 2002-2005.
Gene was an excellent administrator while he served at DePaul. Among his many accomplishments he was the athletics director that negotiated with the local affiliates and WGN to get men's basketball games on television in the late 70's, he expanded the program by adding women's softball and along with Father Ed Riley and Dr. Patricia Ewers crafted DePaul's first Title IX plan that began allocating scholarships and program support for women's athletics at DePaul during that same time period.
Services will be Sunday and Monday in Mount Prospect, Ill. Visitation is Sunday from 3-8 p.m. at Friedrichs Funeral Home and funeral mass is at 10 a.m. at St. Raymond de Penafort Church on Monday.
