CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The DePaul track and field teams put together another nice outing on Saturday afternoon at the Illini Open in Champaign, riding the momentum it built at the Blue and Gold Invite last month.

The Blue Demons captured seven individual events on Saturday.

For the second straight meet, sophomore Tayler Whittler won the 200-meter dash, this time posting a time of 24.95, by .07 seconds over Illinois' Asia Thomas. Whittler placed second in the 60-meter with a time of 7.67 seconds.

In the 800, freshman Shianne Baggett (2:20.60) won the meet convincingly, topping second-place finisher Michelle Frigo (Illinois) by nearly two seconds. Rounding out the women's first-place finishes was Gabrielle Howard, whose distance of 11.07m was good enough to hold off teammate McShayla Kirksy (10.95m) in the triple jump.

Jackie Kasal (1:37.41) took second in the 600-meter run while the team of Whittler, Ayesha Ewing, Erin McCoy and Julie Dambra (3:53.44) placed second in the 4x400-meter relay.

On the men's side, Matt Babicz won the shot put competition for the second straight meet to open up the season, posting a throw of 18.92 meters, over two meters longer than the runner-up finisher.

Mac Melto (49.66) and Tonderai Tomu (49.72) placed 1-2 in the 400-meter dash and Chris Miedema won the 1-mile run with a time of 4:19.05.

Finally, Tomu and Melto teammed with Xavier Jones and Chaz Bottoms to win the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:18.95.

DePaul placed second on both the men's and women's side on Saturday. The men finished with 107 points while the women posted 97. Host Illinois won both team events.

The Blue Demons will next compete at the Mike Lints Alumni Open on Friday (Jan. 17) in Allendale, Mich.
