Melto Shines on Day One in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The DePaul track and field teams put together a successful outing on Friday at the 49er Classic in Charlotte, N.C.

For the Blue Demons, the 49er Classic marks their first meet of the outdoor season.

Mac Melto qualified for the finals in two sprint events, the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash. In the 400, Melto placed third in the prelims with a time of 47.99 seconds. He followed that up by logging a time of 21.66 seconds in the 200, good enough for eighth place and a slot in Saturday's final.

On the women's side, Tayler Whittler and Ayesha Ewing both advanced through the prelims of the 200, finishing in seventh and eighth place, respectively. Whittler finished with a time of 24.61 seconds, while Ewing crossed the line in 24.65 seconds.

In the field events, MaShayla Kirksy (5.72m) took fifth in the long jump and Sarah Moss led the Blue Demons with a second-place finish in the discus. Her best throw was 45.72 meters.
