PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Adam Kovacs was DePaul's lone competitor Friday in the abbreviated schedule of the 2013 BIG EAST Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Rutgers.

Kovacs competed in the men's hammer throw and came up a little short of his goal.

"His throw of 51.39 meters was close to his personal record," said DePaul track and field coach Dave Dopek. "It wasn't the throw he wanted to have this weekend, and it did not qualify for the finals.

"But Adam will come back tomorrow for the javelin throw, which is his best event."

Kovacs will enter Saturday's competition with the third-best javelin throw in the BIG EAST this season.

The sophomore from Ontario, Canada recorded a 61.68-meter throw March 30 at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic at Southern Illinois.

First up in the field events for the Blue Demons on Saturday will be Anthony Babicz in the men's shot put.

Leading off the track events for DePaul will be Sarah Gorden in the women's 100-meter hurdles.
