Gates Shines on Day One at BIG EAST Championships

GENEVA, Ohio – DePaul freshman Jade Gates captured first in the hammer throw and second in the javelin on Friday at the BIG EAST Championship. Through the first day of competition, the women’s team is in third place while the men’s squad is in fourth place.

Gates was crowned as DePaul’s first women’s hammer throw winner with a personal best distance of 53.73 meters. She followed that effort with a second-place finish in the javelin (44.42m). Rebecca Chounaird followed Gates with a fifth-place finish in the hammer throw (47.84m) and Dylan Marshall was third in the javelin (42.21m).

DePaul took three of the top five spots in the men’s hammer throw with Dominic Marshall in second, Isaac Jimenez in fourth and Alex Murray in fifth place. Marshall posted a distance of 54.08 meters followed by 47.02 meters by Jimenez and a personal best from Murray at 46.15 meters. William Hauser also posted a top-five finish in the javelin throw with a distance of 57.28 meters.

Gabrielle Howard and Jade Nolan placed second and third in the long jump and Brian Mada was second in the men’s long jump. Howard leapt to a distance of 5.77 meters and Nolan finished with a best jump of 5.61 meters. Mada was second with a mark of 6.85 meters.

The remainder of the opening day of the BIG EAST Championships featured preliminary track events. Alexia Brooks, Kyle Decker and Adam Nelson all took the top spot heading in Saturday’s finals. Brooks (13.47) was the top finisher in the 100-meter hurdles while Decker (14.49 – PR) was the fastest qualifier in the 110-meter hurdles. Nelson posted the best time of the day in the 100-meter dash at 10.80.

Other finals qualifiers included Babajide Bamgbose (110m hurdles – 15.51), Simone Carr (400m hurdles – 1:02.62 – PR), Rutendo Chimbaru (400m dash – 57.57), Kaitlen Crawford (100m hurdles – 14.36 – PR), Decker (400m hurdles – 54.68), Laura Edwards (400m dash – 56.41), Elizabeth Endy (800m run – 2:10.25), Sebastian Feyersinger (200m dash – 21.80, 400m dash – 48.69), Jarvis Friend-Grace (400m hurdles – 55.01), Adam Nelson (200m dash – 21.97 – PR), Jessica Sanborn (1500m run – 4:32.70 – PR), Brendan Van Voorhis (400m dash – 49.31), Isaac Walker (200m dash – 22.16), Kiersten Walker (200m dash – 24.59, 400m dash – 56.63) and Jessica Watkins (100m dash – 12.11).

The women’s team finished the first day with 47 points in the six scored events to sit in third place. The men’s team is in fourth place with 31 points through seven scored events.
