Gates Places 21st at NCAA West Preliminaries

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Jade Gates capped a memorable freshman season by placing 21st in the javelin throw on Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships West Preliminary. The All-BIG EAST performer recorded a distance of 46.17 meters at the meet hosted by Sacramento State.

Her throw of just over 46 meters was her second-best distance in the javelin during the outdoor season. She posted a personal best mark of 47.43 meters at the Illinois Twilight. Gates was one of 16 competitors in the first flight on Thursday and finished third in her group.

Stanford’s Mackenzie Little won the event with a distance of 57.19 meters and the top 12 of the 48 competitors advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.

Gates earned the BIG EAST Championship Outstanding Field Performer honor after winning the hammer throw and finishing second in the javelin at the conference meet. During the outdoor season, Gates won the javelin throw in three meets as well as winning the hammer throw in four meets. She was also the BIG EAST Women’s Field Athlete of the Week twice during the outdoor season.

DePaul continues action at the West Prelims on Friday with Alexia Brooks in the women’s 100-meter hurdles first round. Brooks could advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals in the hurdles and Brian Mada will compete in the men’s triple jump on Saturday evening.
