Blue Demons Season Comes to a Close
June 9, 2012
DES MOINES – On Saturday at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, sophomore Matt Babicz took to the field and competed in the men’s shot put against the nation’s best.
Though he did not advance at the championships, Babicz put forth another impressive performance to end his sophomore season at DePaul.
The BIG EAST Conference champion in the shot put, Babicz’s first throw of his three-throw set proved to be his best. Babicz rattled off a first distance of 18.33 meters—the same distance that won him the BIG EAST title. He followed with two sub-18 distances, neither of which would be enough to advance to the shot put finals which take only the top nine throws.
With the shot put concluded, DePaul’s 2012 outdoor season also came to an end. The Blue Demons throws program had one of its best seasons in team history, culminating with three student-athletes—Babicz, Melissa Fraser, and Alanna Kovacs—reaching the outdoor championships. Of the three, only Babicz returns next year for DePaul as he begins his junior season.
