Jan. 10, 2014
CHICAGO -- The DePaul track and field teams will travel a few hours south to Champaign, Ill., on Saturday to compete at the Illini Open, hosted by the University of Illinois.
The meet will be the Blue Demons' second of the season. They are looking to build off a strong performance at the Blue and Gold Invitational (Notre Dame, Ind.) on Dec. 6.
Sophomore Tayler Whittler won two competitions (60-yard, 200-yard dashes) at the Blue and Gold Invitational and will help lead DePaul in Champaign. Her time of 7.62 in the 60-yard dash was a school record. In the 200, Whittler and teammate Ayesha Ewing went 1-2 to pace the Blue Demons at Notre Dame. Whittler will be in action in both races on Saturday in Champaign.
On the men's side, Matt Babicz won DePaul's third competition of the day at the Blue and Gold Invite, taking the shot put with an 18.65-meter throw. He will compete in the shot put again on Saturday at Illinois.
Field events in Champaign begin at 10 a.m. Saturday morning. The preliminary trials of the 60-yard dash start at 12 p.m. to kick off the track events.
Joining DePaul at the Illini Open will be Loyola (Ill.), Illinois, Eastern Illinois, Saint Louis, the CU Racing Team, Lindenwood (Mo.) and Indiana State.
