Track and Field Picks Up More BIG EAST Qualifications
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Seven Blue Demons recorded BIG EAST Championship qualifying performances as the DePaul men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Purdue Invitational on Saturday. The Blue Demons won two events at Lambert Field House while competing against talent from Purdue, St. Joseph’s, UIC, Western Illinois and Wright State. Claire Duck opened the day’s track events by winning the women’s mile run with a time of 5:04.84. She broke through the BIG EAST standard of 5:08.44 while edging unattached runner Katie Morrical by nearly three seconds. Nick Schaefer followed in the men’s mile run as he placed second with a time of 4:19.50. He met the BIG EAST standard of 4:19.54. DePaul’s throwing corps added a pair of BIG EAST qualifying marks. Virginia MacFabe took third in the women’s weight throw with a mark of 16.91m, while Brad Millar covered 17.09m in the men’s weight throw for a third place performance. Both MacFabe and Millar already surpassed their respective BIG EAST standards of 15.25m and 14.97m at the Blue/Gold Invitational in December. The field events also saw Joe Strawder pick up his second BIG EAST qualifying long jump of the season with a personal-best indoor leap of 7.12m. He placed second in the event while clearing the standard of 6.55m. Stephanie Williams qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in the women’s 60m dash as she took second place with a time of 7.71. Her final time and her preliminary mark of 7.74 both meet the qualifying standard of 7.85. The women’s 800m run saw Mary Cate Quiett finish second with a time of 2:16.83 as she eclipsed the BIG EAST qualifying standard of 2:17.04. Erik Felt gave DePaul its second first place performance of the day as he took the men’s 600m crown with a time of 1:25.47. No team scores were kept at the meet. The Blue Demons return to action on Friday, January 18 at the Notre Dame Indoor Opener in Notre Dame, Indiana.
