Track and Field Finishes Division I Invitational
Sophomore Stephanie Williams and freshman Joe Strawder became the latest Blue Demons to earn a ticket to the February 17-18 BIG EAST Indoor Championships. Williams recorded a time of 7.32 in the 55m dash to finish second and reach the converted 60m dash qualifying time of 7.85. Strawder posted a distance of 6.86m to win the long jump while surpassing the standard of 6.55m.
For the third consecutive meet, DePaul’s throwers delivered qualifying performances in the women’s weight throw. The Blue Demons swept the top three places, as junior Tammy Burris, senior Jamie Holifield and freshman Virginia MacFabe all met the qualifying mark of 15.25m for their third time this season. Burris took first place with a throw of 17.13m, Holifield grabbed second with a distance of 16.93m, and MacFabe followed in third with a 16.40m performance.
Burris also became the first DePaul woman this season to reach the shot put standard of 12.50m. She placed second in the event with a mark of 12.95m.
Freshman Brad Millar won the men’s weight throw with a distance of 17.07m, his best throw of the season. He has surpassed the standard of 14.97m in every meet so far this season.
The Blue Demons also picked up first place finishes from freshmen Kaaydah Nangle and Scott Cooper. Nangle won the women’s 55m hurdles with a time of 8.79, while Cooper took the men’s 800m crown with a time of 1:57.76.
BIG EAST rival Marquette swept the team titles, scoring 194 points in the women’s standings and 185.5 points in the men’s competitions.
DePaul’s indoor campaign continues Friday, January 19 at the Notre Dame Opener in Notre Dame, Indiana.
