Track and Field Finishes Notre Dame Opener
NOTRE DAME, Ind. Mary Cate Quiett and Stephanie Williams delivered a pair of first place finishes as the DePaul men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Notre Dame Indoor Opener on Friday. The Blue Demons posted 11 BIG EAST Conference Championship qualifying performances at the Loftus Sports Center.
Williams opened the evening’s track events by winning the women’s 60m dash with a time of 7.73. She broke through the BIG EAST qualifying standard of 7.85 for the third time this season. It was the first of two qualifying performances for Williams on Friday, as she placed third in the 200m dash with a personal-best time of 25.00, which surpassed the standard of 25.50.
Quiett won the women’s mile run with a time of 5:00.41, breaking through the BIG EAST standard of 5:08.44. Later in the meet, she placed second in the 800m run with a time of 2:18.15.
The men’s 200m dash saw a trio of Blue Demons post BIG EAST qualifications, as Gabe Harris, Gabriel Vargas and Gilbert Lifton finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. Harris posted a time of 22.58, while Vargas and Lifton followed with identical times of 22.59. All three DePaul sprinters easily met the qualifying standard of 22.69. In addition, Harris earned a BIG EAST Championship bid in the 400m dash as he finished third with a mark of 48.86.
The Blue Demons also delivered successful performances in the field events. Joe Strawder opened the meet with BIG EAST qualifying marks in the long jump and the triple jump. He placed third in the long jump with a personal-best indoor leap of 7.20m before he took third place in the triple jump with a mark of 13.84m. Virginia MacFabe placed fourth in the women’s weight throw with a qualifying distance of 16.01m, while Brad Millar took third in the men’s weight throw with a qualifying mark of 16.71m.
The Blue Demons return to competition on Saturday, January 26 at the University of Illinois Carle/Health Alliance Invitational in Champaign, Illinois.
