Track and Field Teams Travel to Grand Valley State
CHICAGO The DePaul men’s and women’s track and field squads travel to the other side of Lake Michigan for the second time this season to compete on the campus of Grand Valley State for the Bob Eubanks Invitational. The meet, held in the Laker Turf Building, features competitors from Saint Joseph’s, Bethel College, Valparaiso, Detroit Mercy, Davenport, Aquinas, Alma, Sienna Heights, and Grand Valley State, on Fri., January 23. Field events get started at 3 p.m. (CST) Junior Virginia MacFabe leads the weight throwers with two BIG EAST Conference qualifying marks, including a team-high throw of 15.49m. Freshman Alanna Kovacs holds the top-four performances in the shot put, including her conference qualifying mark of 13.03m. Joe Strawder leads-off the jumping events for the men, while Cynthia Edwards, Ivy Moffett, and Brittany Lewis represent the Blue Demon jumpers for the women. Strawder has earned a spot at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships in both the long jump and triple jump. Running events commence at 3:30 p.m. beginning with the 3000m. The DePaul distance stand-outs include Terah Cheatham, Stephanie Hughes, Luke Rygh, and Jakub Kolacz. Cheatham and Rygh currently hold the season-high times of 10:15.33 and 9:05.04, respectively. Sprinting events are slated next, featuring co-school record holder Stephanie Williams in the 60m. Williams has placed first in all 60m competitions this season, and has placed first or second in every 200m dash. The senior tied the school record of 7.66 the first time the team traveled to GVSU back in December. Veteran sprinters Gilbert Lifton, Patrick Smith, and Gabe Harris, in addition to newcomer Tristan Stagger have combined for nine top-five finishes so far this season. Additionally, both Gabe Harris and Patrick Smith have earned a conference championship berth in the 400m. Concluding the evening of completion will be the 4x400m relay. Kim Boisvert, Erin Lakie, Kelly Pickering, Toni Salvatore make up the women’s team. Passing the baton for the men will be Smith, Erik Felt, Stagger, and Lifton. Results will be posted immediately after the meet.
