CHICAGO – The Blue Demons are headed to a mega sports complex in Geneva, Ohio this weekend for what is essentially a rehearsal for the BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championships.

They will compete in the Spire Institute Midwest Indoor Track & Field Open Friday and Saturday, which will be the site of the BIG EAST Conference meet Feb. 16-17. Geneva is located 45 miles east of Cleveland.

Spire has 750,000 square feet of indoor facilities with indoor synthetic turf fields for football, soccer and softball fields. There is a nine-acre outdoor stadium for football, soccer, track and field and lacrosse. A separate outdoor fields complex has eight soccer fields, four baseball and four softball fields and four lacrosse fields.

DePaul will perform in Spire’s 240,000 square-foot indoor track facility.

“This is an opportunity for our athletes to get the lay of the land,” said DePaul track and field coach Dave Dopek. “They can check out the place where our conference meet is going to be held.

“We’re looking to have more qualifiers for the BIG EAST meet and to post better marks for those who have already qualified.”

Heading up the Blue Demon qualifiers is Jordon Vaughn, whose 60-meter dash time of 6.83 seconds is tied for the best mark in the conference.

The Spire Midwest Open begins at 6 p.m. (Chicago time) Friday with the women’s distance medley relay. Saturday’s competition opens with the men’s shot put at 9 a.m.
