Track and Field to Compete at Illinois
CHICAGO The DePaul men’s and women’s track and field teams travel to Champaign, Illinois this weekend for the Carle/Health Alliance Classic. Saturday’s meet, at the University of Illinois Armory, opens at 9 a.m. (CST).
In addition to the Illini, the field of competition includes squads from Eastern Illinois, Illinois State, Lincoln (Mo.) and Southern Illinois.
Tammy Burris, Melissa Fraser and Virgina MacFabe open the meet for DePaul at 9:30 a.m. when they enter the women’s weight throw. Burris and MacFabe both join the event with throws greater than the BIG EAST Conference Championship qualifying standard of 15.25m, while Fraser carries a season-best throw of 13.74m. Brad Millar follows at 11 a.m. in the men’s weight throw as he looks for his fourth BIG EAST qualifying mark of the season.
Competition on the track gets underway at 11:30 a.m. with the women’s and men’s 60m dash preliminaries. Shauna Lurey, Lauren Rajski and Stephanie Williams enter the women’s race, while Mo Drame and Thomas Kent join the men’s race. Last week’s Notre Dame Opener saw Williams win the 60m dash with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 7.73.
The Blue Demon throwers return to action at 1:30 p.m. when Ebonie Cobb joins Burris in the women’s shot put. Cobb holds two throws this season greater than 11.50m, while Burris enters the event with a season-best mark of 11.39m.
Jamil Chammas, Erik Felt, Z Stein and Gabriel Vargas race in the men’s 400m dash at 1:52 p.m. before Kyra Coffey and Jessica Rodriguez take on the women’s 400m dash. Coffey recorded a team-best 400m time of 59.96 at the Notre Dame Opener.
Distance events conclude at 4:25 p.m. with the women’s and men’s 3,000m races. Terah Cheatham and Stephanie Hughes enter the women’s 3,000m run, while Jeremy Applebaum and Jakub Kolacz compete in the men’s 3,000m run.
The meet closes out at 4:49 p.m. with the women’s and men’s 4x400m relays. The Blue Demons are also set to compete in the women’s and men’s 200m dash, women’s and men’s 600m run, women’s and men’s 800m run, women’s and men’s mile run, women’s and men’s triple jump, women’s and men’s distance medley relay, men’s long jump and men’s 1,000m run.
The 2007 Carle/Health Alliance Classic saw the Blue Demons place seventh out of nine squads in the women’s standings and sixth out of seven teams in the men’s standings.
