Brad Millar Named BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week
CHICAGO - Senior thrower Brad Millar added another line to his already-long list of accolades today after being named BIG EAST Conference Field Athlete of the Week. It is the second time he has earned the honor, having first won the weekly award during the 2009 outdoor season.
Millar dominated the weight throw at the Badger Track Classic last weekend in Madison, Wis. The Port Elgin, Ontario native not only took first place in the event with a career-best throw of 20.03 meters, but surpassed the NCAA provisional standard in four of his six attempts. His winning distance currently ranks ninth nationally, while he leads all BIG EAST weight throwers by more than a meter.
Last season, Millar was the BIG EAST runner-up in the weight throw after hitting a then-personal record distance of 19.64m. In addition, Millar became the sixth-ever Blue Demon to earn a bid to the NCAA Championship after placing fourth in the hammer throw at the Mideast Regional Championship.
Millar joins Matthew Graham as the only Blue Demon within the cross country and track and field programs to earn Athlete of Week honors on multiple occasions. Graham claimed the award three times during his first two years on the cross country course. Earlier this season, Mary Cate Quiett and Joe Strawder also won the weekly tribute for their efforts at the Blue and Gold Meet.
Rounding out the list of this week's awardees include Louisville's Jere' Summers and Matt Bruce, as well as Shericka Ward of Villanova.
Millar and Co. return to action this weekend, Jan. 29-30, when the teams divide forces to compete at both the Indiana Relays and the Chicago Duals.
