Blue Demons Continue to Add Events to Conference Championship Slate at ISU Classic

AMES, Iowa - On the first day of competition at the ISU Classic, the DePaul men's and women's track and field squads posted five BIG EAST Conference qualification marks, including an NCAA provisional qualification courtesy of Brad Millar. In addition, Tonderai Tomu added another event to the Blue Demon's conference championship schedule, after meeting the league standard in the 200m.

In the men's weight throw, Millar surpassed the NCAA provisional qualifying standard for a team-best fourth time this season, placing fourth in the weight throw with a distance of 20.42m. The senior enters next weekend's BIG EAST championship as the No. 1 seed. Freshman Tim Vala added another league qualification distance under his belt, recording a throw of 15.26m.

Lindsey Holden had a career day, placing 23rd amidst 130 participants in the 200m dash. The personal-record time of 25.21 gives the freshman her second BIG EAST qualifying performance in the event, and sixth overall. Idia Omogiate finished in the top half of the field after clocking a 25.63, while Aforo Okraku crossed the finish line at the 27.71 mark.

Tomu posted a team-best 22.13 in the men's 200m, adding a second event to his BIG EAST Championship slate. He has now met the league standard in two events (200m and 400m), out of the mere three races he has run in this season. His only non-qualifying performance was in the 300m, which is not raced at the conference meet. However, his time of 35.10 did allow him to claim a spot in the DePaul record books.

Also racing in the 200m was Gilbert Lifton and Chris Kyles. Lifton recorded a season-best 22.78, while Kyles finished in a time of 23.05.

Joe Strawder, who prior to this weekend ranked eighth in the BIG EAST behind a leap of 7.08m, will likely move up on the performance list after extending his season-best performance to 7.28m. The senior placed second overall, today, and was the top collegiate finisher. Eddie Anderson took 32nd, after stretching the tape to 6.41m.

Stephanie Hughes, the lone Blue Demon distance runner in action today, placed eighth in the 5,000m after stopping the watch at 18:04.96.

In the women's weight throw, Virginia MacFabe was the top competitor for DePaul, throwing a distance of 14.87m. Alanna Kovacs posted a throw of 14.75m, while Katelyn MacFabe logged a distance of 14.41m.
