Track and Field Concludes Day One of BIG EAST Indoor Championships

AKRON, Ohio – The DePaul men’s and women’s track and field teams closed out day one of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Saturday at the University of Akron Field House.  With Sunday’s full day of competition remaining, the Blue Demons hold 11th place in the women’s standings with six points, and 12th place in the men’s standings with one point.

 

The women’s weight throw saw senior Jamie Holifield post a mark of 16.78m to take fifth place and score four points for DePaul.  Junior Tammy Burris followed in seventh place with a 16.67m throw, scoring two points.  Both throwers join freshman Ebonie Cobb for Sunday’s shot put at 10:35 a.m. (CST)

 

Freshman Brad Millar notched a distance of 17.24m to grab eighth place in the men’s weight throw.  He scored one point for the Blue Demons and was followed by freshman Curtis Hoag, who placed 12th with 15.69m throw.  Hoag returns on Sunday at 10:25 a.m. for the men’s shot put.

 

The women’s mile run preliminaries saw junior Claire Duck place fourth with a season-best time of 4:54.15.  She races in Sunday’s mile run finals at 11:20 a.m.

 

Junior Allyson Petersen took sixth place in the women’s 800m run preliminaries with a time of 2:15.61.  Her performance marks the top 800m time for any DePaul woman this season and places her in Sunday’s finals at 10:20 a.m.

 

A pair of Blue Demon men posted qualifying times in preliminary track events.  Sophomore Gabe Harris took eighth in the 400m dash with a season-best time of 48.29 and advances to Sunday’s finals at 12:10 p.m.  Sophomore Patrick Smith placed 10th in the 200m dash with a season-best time of 22.28.  He returns for Sunday’s finals at 12:30 p.m.

 

Sunday’s action also puts DePaul in the men’s and women’s 4x800m relays, men’s 4x400m relay, and men’s triple jump.

 

After five events scored, Notre Dame sits atop the women’s standings with 26 points, while Louisville leads the men’s standings with 54 points.
