Track and Field Concludes BIG EAST Championship Weekend

AKRON, Ohio- The DePaul Track and Field teams closed out the final day of their inaugural BIG EAST Indoor Championship at the University of Akron Field House Sunday.  The Blue Demon men’s team finished 12th overall while the women’s team placed 16th in the final standings.

 

Senior Kaylah Burks cleared the bar at 1.70m in the women’s high jump, breaking her own school record and taking 8th place in the event to score one point for DePaul.

 

In the women’s shot put, junior Jamie Holifield hit a mark of 12.91m in her first throw.  It was the best throw from a Blue Demon this season and placed her 13th overall in the event.

 

Freshman Gabe Harris, who recorded his second best time of the season in Saturday’s 400m preliminaries, notched a time of 50.35 in Sunday’s finals to finish 8th and score one point for DePaul.

 

The men’s 4x400m relay team of freshman Gabriel Vargas, sophomore Rich Fugiel, Harris and freshman Patrick Smith set a season best time of 3:17.05 to finish 7th overall and score two points for the Blue Demons.

 

At the conclusion of the weekend, the BIG EAST team titles went to Connecticut’s men, who scored 135 points, and Notre Dame’s women, who scored 109.5 points.

 

DePaul will compete next at the Alex Wilson Invitational, March 3rd and 4th in South Bend, Indiana.
