Track and Field Gears Up for the BIG EAST Championships
CHICAGO The DePaul men’s and women’s travel to New York City this weekend to compete in the 2009 Indoor BIG EAST Conference Championships. A total of 22 Blue Demon student-athletes have qualified to compete amongst the best in the conference at the New Balance Armory located in the Bronx. The events get underway on Saturday, February 21 and conclude the following day. Brad Millar, two-time BIG EAST hammer throw champion, was the runner up last season in the weight throw. Millar currently sits in second place on the conference best-performance list behind Andrew Hackney of Louisville. Hackney was the only student-athlete to better Millar’s career-best performance of 19.09m at the 2008 indoor conference championship. Stephanie Williams qualified for both the 60m and the 200m. Her school-record tying time of 7.66 in the 60m and her season-best 200m performance of 24.84 ranks her in the top-15 against other sprinters in the BIG EAST. Joe Strawder, who placed seventh at last year’s championship, enters as the No. 8 seed with his season-best jump of 7.17m. He has also posted three qualification marks in the triple jump. Mary Cate Quiett has qualified in the 800m, 1000m, and the mile. Terah Cheatham joins Quiett in the mile, behind her season-best time of 5:07.42. Melissa Fraser and Virginia MacFabe are both slated to compete in the weight throw. Fraser leads throwers with her team-best throw of 15.95m. MacFabe qualified just behind her, with a season-best throw of 15.92. The sprinting trio of Gilbert Lifton, Gabe Harris, and Patrick Smith are all scheduled to race in the 400m. Harris leads the team with time of 48.96 and is seeded No. 10. For full schedule of events, live coverage, and daily recaps, visit the BIG EAST’s 2009 Indoor Track and Field Championship Central.
