Track and Field Heads to New York for BIG EAST Championships
Feb. 20, 2014
CHICAGO -- The DePaul track and field teams travel to Armory, N.Y., for the 2014 BIG EAST Championships this weekend (Feb. 21-22).
For the Blue Demons, the Championships will be their seventh team meet of the 2013-14 season.
Senior Matt Babicz has anchored the Blue Demons in the field events this season, placing in the top-three in each of his seven shot put competitions. Babicz was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Tuesday thanks to his efforts at the Fred Wilt Boilermaker Invitational last Saturday. Babicz was the lone DePaul athlete to compete at the event.
Fellow senior Chris Miedema also garnered BIG EAST Player of the Week honors earlier in the season. The distance runner has two first-place finishes this year, including the 800 at the Mike Lints Open and the One-Mile Run at the Illini Open.
On the women's side, sophomore Tayler Whittler has broken the DePaul school record in the 60 three times this year and has won two events in the 200-meter dash. MaShayla Kirksy has performed well during her rookie campaign as well, winning two long jump events, including last week's competition at the Chicagoland Championships.
The 2014 Championships mark the second consecutive year and fifth time in six years that the fabled Armory in upper Manhattan has hosted the event.
Competition begins on Friday morning with a schedule heavy with field events. Saturday’s program starts in the afternoon with a line-up of running finals including the men and women’s mile.
