DePaul Opens Outdoor Track and Field Season at 49er Classic
CHICAGO- After one of the most successful indoor seasons in program history, the DePaul men's and women's track and field teams begin the outdoor season Friday, March 19 at the 49er Classic. The meet, hosted by the Charlotte, will be held at Irwin Belk Track & Field Center, and feature student-athletes from nearly 40 institutions and track clubs from across the country.
Action for the Blue Demons gets underway at 11 a.m. (CST) when Melissa Fraser makes her season debut in the hammer throw. Her signature event, the javelin throw, is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday. Friday's running events won't get started until 3 p.m. for DePaul, at which time Lindsey Holden, Mary Cate Quiett and Tonderai Tomu get set to race in the 400m. During the indoor season, Holden set records in the 300m and 400m, while Tomu set an all-time best in the men's 300m. Quiett, the 2010 BIG EAST Conference 800m Champion, reset her own 800m and 1,000m record during her junior campaign, in addition to adding the 4x400m record to her resume. Also slated to compete this weekend is Joe Strawder, who earned All-BIG EAST accolades after placing second in the long jump at the league championship. The senior makes his first pass down the long jump runway at 4:15 p.m. on Friday, and continues on Saturday at 12:45 p.m. in the triple jump competition. Tim Nedow opens the competition for the Blue Demons on Saturday at 9 a.m., when the sophomore makes his first attempt in the shot put. Nedow placed third in the shot put at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship. Full results and recaps will be available at www.DePaulBlueDemons.com following each day's competition. Following the 49er Classic, DePaul will make the 170-mile journey east to attend the Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State, on March 26-27.
