Burris and Millar Break DePaul Records at SIU Spring Classic

CARBONDALE, Ill. – A pair of DePaul records fell and eight Blue Demons surpassed BIG EAST Championship standards on Saturday as the men’s and women’s track and field teams concluded two days of competition at the Southern Illinois Spring Classic.  DePaul placed sixth in the women’s standings and 10th among men’s teams at the Lew Hartzog Track.

 

Tammy Burris threw the shot put 13.46m to exceed Anjeanette Latimer’s school record of 13.39m, a mark that stood since 1994.  Burris’ performance also eclipsed the BIG EAST qualifying standard of 12.50m and earned second place in the event.

 

The men’s javelin throw saw Brad Millar post a distance of 54.74m to break Milt Homolka’s 1950 DePaul record of 53.72m.  Millar took third place in the event and surpassed the BIG EAST qualifying mark of 54.00m.

 

The field events were also highlighted by BIG EAST qualifying performances in the women’s discus and men’s long jump.  Jamie Holifield threw the discus 44.20m to take third place and break through the standard of 40.00m.  Joe Strawder cleared 7.05m in the long jump to eclipse the standard of 6.80m and finish sixth.

 

On the track, Claire Duck won the women’s 1,500m run with a qualifying time of 4:33.52.  She exceeded the BIG EAST standard of 4:38.44.  The men’s 400m dash saw Gabe Harris post a qualifying time of 48.64.  He finished ninth and eclipsed the standard of 49.04.

 

Anthony Becknek and Eoin Dunne both broke through the men’s 3,000m steeplechase qualifying time of 9:34.24.  Becknek took second place in the event with a time of 9:23.88 and Dunne finished fifth with a time of 9:33.03.

 

The Blue Demon women scored 64.50 points and finished ahead of Eastern Illinois, UW-Milwaukee, Lincoln, Western Illinois, Bradley and Rend Lake.  The DePaul men scored 37 points to finish ahead of Western Illinois and St. LouisIndiana State swept the team titles with 122 points in the women’s events and 142 points in the men’s events.

 

DePaul returns to action on Saturday, March 31 at the Texas-Arlington Relays and Purdue’s Mike Poehlein Invitational.
