Personal Bests Push DePaul in Outdoor Opener

CARBONDALE, Ill.- Several Blue Demons set personal best performances as the DePaul track and field teams kicked off their 2006 outdoor schedule this weekend at the Southern Illinois University Spring Classic.  The women’s squad scored 25 total points to place ninth in their field while the men posted 20 points to also finish ninth.

 

Sophomore Tammy Burris started the action for DePaul on Friday as she set a new personal best in the women’s hammer throw.  Burris shattered her previous best of 45.66m with a mark of 49.72 as she took sixth place. 

 

Saturday morning saw junior Jamie Holifield open the day with a personal best, hitting a mark of 43.06m in the discus throw.  The performance broke her old best of 40.22m and earned fourth place.  The trend continued as senior Lindsey Deason also set a personal best on her way to fifth place, throwing the javelin 36.18m to pass her previous top mark of 31.95m.

 

Several Blue Demon runners kicked off the outdoor season with positive notes on the track.  Sophomore Allyson Petersen set a personal best time of 2:18.84 to take fifth place in the women’s 800m run, eclipsing her previous best of 2:21.25.  In addition, freshman Gabe Harris took fifth in the men’s 200m dash with a time of 22.24.

 

First place team titles went to Illinois State’s women with 147 points, and Indiana State’s men with 179.50 points.

 

DePaul returns to action this Saturday, April 1 as they travel to South Bend, Indiana for Notre Dame’s Spring Opener.
