Blue Demon Track and Field Squads Head to Purdue for the Mike Poehlein Invitational
CHICAGO The DePaul men’s and women’s track and field teams gear up to compete in the Mike Poehlein Invitation hosted by Purdue. The meet features BIG EAST Conference rivals Louisville and Notre Dame, in addition to squads from Ball State, UIC, Bethel College, Marian College, Rose-Hulman, Spring Arbor, St. Joseph’s, Grand Valley State, and Hillsdale.
The Blue Demon’s opened their outdoor season last weekend at the Bobby Lane Invitational with two NCAA regional qualifiers, led by throwers Melissa Fraser and BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week Brad Millar. Fraser earned first place in the javelin with a 48.16m throw, in addition to surpassing the conference standard in the hammer throw. Miller was the top collegiate finisher in the hammer throw, with a distance of 62.42m. Both will compete in the hammer throw on Fri., April 3 at 2 p.m. (CST), along with Ebonie Cobb, Alanna Kovacs, Virginia MacFabe, Jim Theologes, and James Waller.
The remaining events continue on Saturday at 9 a.m., beginning with discus and javelin throw. Jumping events commence at 10:30 a.m., when Brittany Lewis and Ivy Moffett compete in the long jump, while Cynthia Edwards represents DePaul in the triple jump. Joe Strawder has been given double duty, having been entered in both events. Last week, Strawder earned his first BIG EAST qualifying mark in the triple jump with his second place leap of 14.78m, while placing seventh in the long jump.
Terah Cheatham, who won the 3,000m last weekend, kicks off the running events at 11 a.m. with the 3,000m steeplechase. Distance runners Kelsey Dolan, Stephanie Hughes, Claire O'Brien, Stacy Schmitz, Dennis Baliga, Brian Begalke, Matthew Graham, and Jakub Kolacz are all slated to run in the 5,000m later in the afternoon.
Representing the middle distance runners are Cari Krikorian, Erin Lakie, Kelly Pickering, Mary Cate Quiett, and Rob Morgan, who all compete in the 1,500m around noon. Krikorian, Lakie, Pickering, Quiett, as well as Toni Salvatore and Edin Pasalic run the 800m a few hours later. Last weekend, Salvatore placed sixth in the event with a team-best time of 2:19.38.
Stephanie Williams and Gabe Harris collected three BIG EAST qualifying marks last weekend, both earning a berth in the 200m. Additionally, Williams qualified in the 100m. Kyra Coffey, along with Jessica Rodriguez and Laura Wilson, enter the meet in the 400m. Coffey placed fifth last weekend, with a time of 59.42. Jamil Chammas, Matt Holland, Patrick Smith, Tristan Stagger, Gilbert Lifton, Coffey, Kelcie Daniels, and Meredith Klein all join Williams and Harris in the 200m.
Blue Demon hurdlers Smith, Daniels, Klein, and Lauren Bales participate in the 400m hurdles at 2:00 p.m. Smith qualified for the conference meet last weekend with a time of 55.64, while Daniels finished in fifth place behind a time of 1:04.53.
The meet concludes when Harris, Erik Felt, Pasalic, and Gabe Vargas all pass the baton in the 4x400m relay.
