Track and Field Enters Chicagoland Championships
CHICAGO The DePaul men’s and women’s track and field teams compete against local talent this weekend at the 2008 Chicagoland Championships. The Blue Demons aim to defend their 2007 Chicagoland team tiles on Friday and Saturday at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois.
DePaul enters the meet on Friday at noon (CST) when Brad Millar joins the men’s hammer throw. Millar opened the outdoor season last week in Arlington, Texas with a NCAA Regional Championship qualifying throw of 57.65m.
Tammy Burris, Ebonie Cobb, Melissa Fraser and Virginia MacFabe enter the women’s hammer throw immediately following the men’s event. Burris, MacFabe and Fraser all exceeded the BIG EAST Conference qualifying standard of 45.12m last week; with Burris clearing 51.55m, MacFabe throwing 46.84m and Fraser trailing at 46.35m. Friday also tests DePaul’s throwing corps in the men’s and women’s shot put.
First-day action concludes with the men’s and women’s 10,000m run at 4:30 p.m. Jakub Kolacz represents the Blue Demons in the men’s race, while Stephanie Hughes joins the women’s competition.
Saturday’s events get underway at 10:30 a.m. with the women’s and men’s javelin throw. Fraser and Burris enter the women’s event before Millar takes on the men’s event. Last week saw Fraser break the DePaul javelin record with an NCAA Regional qualifying throw of 48.34m.
The Blue Demons also open Saturday’s action with the men’s and women’s long jump. Joe Strawder challenges the men’s event after posting an NCAA Regional qualifying jump of 7.41m last week, while Cynthia Edwards and Lauren Rajski enter the women’s event.
Saturday’s distance races commence when Luke Rygh and Darrick Thompson brave the men’s 3,000m steeplechase. Michael Fry, Nick Schaefer and Greg Udzielak follow in the men’s 1,500m run, while Claire Duck and Mary Cate Quiett are set to race in the women’s 1,500m run.
Gabe Harris enters the men’s 400m dash after posting a BIG EAST qualifying time of 48.99 last week. He is joined on Saturday by Jamil Chammas, Richard Fugiel and Gilbert Lifton. The women’s 400m dash features Kyra Coffey and Jessica Rodriguez.
Coffey and Rodriguez return later in the day for the women’s 200m dash, where they are joined by Shauna Lurey, Ivy Moffett and Stephanie Williams. Last week saw Williams open her season with a BIG EAST qualifying 200m time of 24.74.
The meet concludes with the men’s and women’s 4x400m relays. The Blue Demons are also scheduled to compete in the 4x100m relays, 100m dash, 800m run, 400m hurdles, 5,000m run, discus and triple jump.
The 2007 Chicagoland Championships saw DePaul sweep the men’s and women’s team titles. The Blue Demons won 18 events while topping a field of 16 women’s teams and 20 men’s squads.
