Track and Field Enters Sun Angel Track Classic
CHICAGO The DePaul men’s and women’s track and field teams return to action this weekend at the Arizona State Sun Angel Track Classic in Tempe, Arizona. The Blue Demons compete among a field of nationally-ranked competition on Friday and Saturday at Sun Angel Stadium. The hosting Sun Devils currently hold the top ranking among all NCAA Division I women’s teams and the No. 7 ranking among men’s teams. Other ranked men’s teams represented at this weekend’s meet include No. 2 Florida, No. 9 Alabama, No. 12 Auburn, No. 13 Arizona and No. 18 Wisconsin. Ranked women’s teams in the field include No. 5 Florida, No. 16 Auburn, No. 19 Arizona, No. 23 New Mexico and No. 25 Penn State. Tammy Burris and Melissa Fraser open the meet on Friday when they enter the women’s hammer throw at 7 p.m. (CST). Last weekend’s Chicagoland Championships saw Burris win the hammer throw with a mark of 53.29m, while Fraser followed in third place with a 47.50m throw. Brad Millar enters the men’s hammer throw immediately following the women’s event. The Blue Demon sophomore won the hammer throw at the Chicagoland Championships with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 60.87m. Through two weeks of the outdoor season, he carries two performances greater than the NCAA Regional standard of 55.60m. DePaul opens Saturday’s events at Sun Angel Stadium with the women’s and men’s discus at 3 p.m. (CST). Burris enters the women’s event with a season-best throw of 39.76m, while Millar takes on the men’s event with a BIG EAST Championship qualifying mark of 44.59m under his belt. Saturday’s schedule also places DePaul’s throwers in the men’s and women’s javelin throw and women’s shot put. Joe Strawder joins the action at 7 p.m. when he enters the men’s triple jump. The Blue Demon sophomore returns at 9:30 p.m. for the men’s long jump. Strawder opened the season with an NCAA Regional qualifying long jump of 7.41m. The Blue Demons enter competition on the track at 6 p.m. (CST) when Claire Duck, Allyson Petersen and Mary Cate Quiett take on the women’s 800m run. Petersen and Quiett have already satisfied the BIG EAST qualifying standard of 2:14.04. In addition, Quiett set a DePaul 800m record of 2:11.55 at the Chicagoland Championships. Gabe Harris enters the men’s 400m dash at 7:20 p.m. before he returns at 10:10 p.m. for the 200m dash. Stephanie Williams is slated to compete in the women’s 100m dash at 7:50 p.m. and the 200m dash at 10 p.m. The Blue Demons were also slated to compete this weekend at the Elmhurst Intercollegiate Invitational. The meet has been cancelled due to inclement weather.
