Chicagolands Yield Two League Qualifying Performances Courtesy of MacFabe Sisters



CHICAGO – The women’s track and field team led off for DePaul during day one of the Chicagoland Championships hosted by the University of Chicago.  Katelyn MacFabe highlighted the afternoon by winning the discus throw with a BIG EAST Conference Championship qualifying throw, while Virginia MacFabe earned the bid in the hammer competition.

K. MacFabe, a freshman hailing from Palatine, Ill., heaved a personal-record discus throw to top the podium for the first time this season.  Her distance, marked at 42.51m, eclipses the BIG EAST standard of 40.00m.  Ebonie Cobb also logged a top-10 performance in the event, measuring a throw of 37.18m.

Prior to the discus competition, K. MacFabe placed ninth in the hammer throw behind a distance of 42.81m.  Earning top honors for DePaul in the hammer was Virginia MacFabe, who finished in fifth place after logging a league championship qualifying throw of 45.23m.

Stephanie Hughes was the runner-up champion in the 10,000m, clocking a career-best time of 37:22.14.  In the only men’s event of the day, Brian Begalke also logged a personal-record time in the 10K, crossing the finish line at 32:53.30 to place eighth overall.

In the 800m, Kelly Pickering took home second place honors following a time of 2:17.65.  Courtney Avvampato was the other top middle distance runner for the Blue Demons today, placing ninth in the 1,500m following a performance of 4:57.85.

Brittany Lewis and Aforo Okraku tallied top-10 performances in the sprints, as Lewis placed eighth in the 100m, while Okaku finished the 200m in 10th

Meredith Klein posted a 400m hurdle time of 1:08.50 to place sixth overall.  Also earning a sixth-place finish was Cynthia Lewis, who logged a triple jump of 10.87m.

DePaul tallied 40 points to finish in seventh place as a team.  The University of Chicago took top honors with 149 points.
