Track and Field Wraps Up Sun Angel Classic



TEMPE, Ariz. Stephanie Williams posted a DePaul record in the women’s 200m dash and Mary Cate Quiett set a DePaul record in the women’s 800m run as the women’s and men’s track and field teams closed out the Arizona State Sun Angel Track Classic on Saturday.  The Blue Demons notched one NCAA Regional qualifying mark and 10 BIG EAST Conference Championship qualifying performances during the final day of competition at Sun Angel Stadium.

Williams clocked a 200m time of 24.28 as she broke her own 2007 DePaul record of 24.36.  The Blue Demon junior placed 17th in the race while eclipsing the BIG EAST standard of 25.04.  Williams also took second place in the women’s 100m dash with a personal-best time of 12.01.  She broke through the BIG EAST 100m standard of 12.30.

The women’s 800m run saw Quiett finish second with a time of 2:10.24.  Quiett broke the DePaul record of 2:11.55 that she set last week at the Chicagoland Championships.  Claire Duck followed in fifth place with a time of 2:12.29 and Allyson Petersen finished sixth with a time of 2:12.87.  All three Blue Demons satisfied the BIG EAST standard of 2:14.04.

The men’s sprinting events saw Gabe Harris post BIG EAST qualifying times in the 200m and 400m races.  Harris placed 21st in the 200m dash with a personal best time of 22.04 before he finished 17th in the 400m dash with a time of 48.89.  He met the BIG EAST 200m standard of 22.18 and the 400m standard of 49.04.

Melissa Fraser posted an NCAA Regional Championship qualifying mark in the women’s javelin throw as she placed fourth with a distance of 47.23m.  The Blue Demon freshman cracked the NCAA Regional standard of 43.45m for the third time in as many weeks.

Saturday’s field events also saw Brad Millar and Joe Strawder notch a pair of BIG EAST qualifying performances.  Strawder took second place in the men’s long jump with a mark of 7.13m; topping the BIG EAST standard of 6.90m.  Millar placed 15th in the men’s javelin throw preliminaries with a mark of 55.01m; exceeding the BIG EAST standard of 54.00m.

The Blue Demons return to competition on Saturday, April 19 at the Purdue Dave Rankin Invitational in West Lafayette, Indiana.
