Joe Strawder Notches School Record and NCAA Regional Nod at Sun Angel Track Classic



TEMPE, Ariz. Despite rainy weather conditions during the 30th Annual Sun Angel Track Classic, the DePaul men's and women's track and field teams registered BIG EAST Conference and NCAA Regional qualifying performances on Saturday.  Joe Strawder set a new school record, as welll as tallied a regional nod, while 13 Blue Demons surpassed the BIG EAST standard.

Strawder joins the company of Brad Millar and Melissa Fraser after earning his first NCAA Regional qualifying mark of the season.  His new personl-record in the triple jump of 15.18m sets a new school record.  The previous mark was set by Chris Stafford in 1998, who held the record with a distance of 15.17m.  Strawder also tied for sixth in the long jump with a distance of 6.88m.

Jim Theologes earned his first conference qualifying mark in the shot put, with a sixth place throw of 15.51m.  Alanna Kovacs posted two BIG EAST qualifying performances, placing 15th in the discus with a distance of 44.49m while posting a javelin throw mark of 40.08m to finish in 11th.

Stephanie Williams and Gabe Harris led the sprinters, surpassing the conference standard three times between them both.  Williams finished in fifth place in the 200m behind a time of 24.24, while crossing the line at the 12.19 mark in the 100m to finish in 12th.  Harris posted a time of 21.70 in the 200m to place fourth.

Erik Felt surpassed the conference standard once again in the 400m hurdles, along with Patrick Smith.  After finishing one-two last weekend, they finished seven-eight with times of 53.25 and 53.29, respectively.  Kelcie Daniels led the women hurdlers, surpassing the conference standard in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:03.40, placing eighth.

Mary Cate Quiett toped her previous season-best with a 2:10.52 in the 800m to earn the silver.  Pickering also competed in the event and posted a time of 2:17.35.

On Friday, Brad Millar also tallied an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of his own, placing fourth behind a personal-best throw of 64,79m.

The Blue Demons return to action next weekend, on April 17-18 for the Eastern Michigan Twilight in Ypsilanti, Mich.
