DePaul Track & Field Against Best in Country

CHICAGO – A select squad of Blue Demons will compete at one of the most prestigious track & field meets in the nation.  The Mt. SAC Relays, touted as the stage “where the world’s finest athletes compete,” has seen regular appearances from athletes such as Maurice Green, Marion Jones, and other Olympic-caliber competitors from around the globe.

This three-day meet begins on Friday, April 15th and ends on Sunday, April 17th at the Hilmer Lodge Stadium.  Hosted by Mt. San Antonio Community College in Walnut, California, this year marks the 47th meet after the inaugural competition in 1959.

Competing for DePaul will be Kayla Burks in the high jump, Anthony Becknek in the 3000 meter steeplechase, and both Richard Byrne and Gavin Kennedy in the 1500 meter run.  Becknek, Byrne, and Kennedy will race on Friday afternoon and Burks will make her jumps on Saturday morning.

The rest of the Blue Demon team will participate at the Wheaton Invitational on Saturday, April 16th, in Wheaton, Illinois.

Members of the squad look to follow up on an impressive performance in last weekend’s Chicagoland Championships.  Both the men and women notched four individual victories. DePaul’s men finished fifth overall, while the women brought home second place.

Gavin Kennedy topped two events, winning the 800 meter run in 1:54.31 and the 1500 meter run in only 3:51.30.  Donnie Warner completed the 10,000 meter run in 32:03.22 and Anthony Becknek cruised through the 3000 meter steeplechase in 9:20.72.

On the women’s side, Marissa Petersen won the 400 meter dash in a time of 58.08.  Carrie Moffett surpassed all opponents in the 5000 meter run, crossing the line in 17:31.64.

In the 3000 meter steeplechase, Marlene Key covered the distance with a winning time of 11:11.37.  For the third time this season, Kayla Burks championed the high jump with a 1.65m (5’5.00”) leap.

Following this weekend, the Blue Demons will continue their outdoor season at the Central Collegiate Championship in Champaign, Illinois.  The meet will take place on April 23rd.
