Jumpers Excel at Elmhurst Invitational

ELMHURST, Ill.- Sophomore Ryan Thompson and senior Webster Jones hit BIG EAST qualifying marks to win jumping events as a select squad from the men’s track and field team competed at the Elmhurst College Invitational on Saturday.

 

Thompson started the day by reaching 6.75m in the long jump to take first place and pass the qualifying standard of 6.65m.  The jump surpassed his previous best mark of the season, a March 25 distance of 6.67m.

 

Jones followed Thompson’s lead by clearing the bar at 1.93m to win the high jump and eclipse the qualifying standard of 1.91m.  His performance was also a personal best.

 

On the track, junior Donnie Smith took second place in the 400m run with a personal best time of 49.22.  Sophomore Kriss Arnold finished fourth in the event at 50.09 and freshman Z Stein took sixth place with a time of 51.78.

 

Jamal Cornelious won the men’s 100m dash with a time of 11.30 to finish the day for the Blue Demons.

 

DePaul posted 46 points to place seventh in the team standings despite only participating in four events.  Elmhurst College won the men’s team competition with a total score of 222 points.

 

The Blue Demons will return to action April 27-29 at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. and the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
