Track and Field Concludes Illinois Invitational
Millar won the javelin throw with a BIG EAST qualifying mark of 58.96m. His throw surpassed the previous DePaul record of 54.74m that he set on March 24 at the Southern Illinois Spring Classic.
The men’s hammer throw saw Millar take second place with a season-best 55.38m throw, while Curtis Hoag posted a 48.12m mark to finish 11th. Both DePaul throwers exceeded the BIG EAST standard of 43.40m.
Hoag posted two more BIG EAST qualifying performances as he took fifth place in both the discus throw and shot put. His discus throw of 45.78m surpassed the 42.40m standard, while his 14.85m shot put mark broke the 14.63m standard.
DePaul enjoyed similar success in women’s throwing events as Tammy Burris, Jamie Holifield and Virginia MacFabe collected a total of four BIG EAST qualifying marks. Burris finished second in the women’s shot put with a 13.18m throw, eclipsing the 12.50m standard. The women’s hammer throw saw Burris take second with a 51.70m throw, while Holifield finished fourth with a 50.38m performance, and MacFabe notched a mark of 46.20m to place sixth. All three Blue Demons exceeded the 45.12m qualifying standard.
Cynthia Edwards posted her first BIG EAST triple jump performance by clearing a distance of 11.62m. The DePaul freshman finished fourth overall and surpassed the 11.28m qualifying standard.
Allyson Petersen and Anthony Becknek gave DePaul a pair of first place finishes on the track. Petersen won the women’s 800m run with a time of 2:16.99, while Becknek won the men’s 3,000m steeplechase with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 9:22.17.
Stephanie Williams and Kaaydah Nangle posted two more BIG EAST qualifying performances in the women’s track events. Williams posted a time of 24.81 to finish 11th in the 200m dash and break the qualifying time of 25.04. Nangle recorded a time of 14.62 in the 100m hurdles to place eighth and surpass the qualifying time of 14.84.
Piotr Lewkowski and Gabe Harris collected a pair of BIG EAST qualifying times in the men’s track events. Harris finished third in the men’s 400m dash with a time of 48.39, eclipsing the 49.04 standard. Lewkowski posted a 100m time of 11.06, breaking the 11.10 qualifying time.
No team scores were kept at the meet that included talent from BIG EAST rival Marquette in addition to Illinois, SIU-Edwardsville, Lincoln, Lindenwood and Rend Lake.
