Gates, Mada Earn BIG EAST Weekly Honors

CHICAGO - DePaul's Jade Gates and Brian Mada were named the women's and men's BIG EAST Track Athletes of the Week following standout performances on Saturday at the Illinois Twilight. Gates claimed the women's award for the first time this season while Mada secured his third weekly honor.

Gates won both the javelin throw and the hammer throw on Saturday in Champaign. The freshman won the javelin with a personal-best distances of 47.43 meters. Her mark is the best in the BIG EAST this season, ranked 50th in the NCAA and 26th in the West Region. Gates also won the hammer throw with a toss of 50.52 meters, and recorded the BIG EAST's 10th-best shot put (12.40m) this season.

Mada swept the long jump and triple jump for the third time in as many outdoor meets this season and broke his own school record with a distance of 15.74 meters in the triple jump. The junior's record-setting mark is ranked 17th nationally and ninth in the West Region. Mada already owns the top long jump mark in the BIG EAST this season and was .06 meters shy of that with Saturday's winning leap of 7.38m.

Joining Gates and Mada on the weekly list of conference honors was Georgetown's Amos Bartelsmeyer as the men's track athlete of the week and Jody-Ann Knight also from Georgetown for the women's track athlete of the week.

Gates, Mada and the Blue Demons host the DePaul Invitational this Saturday at Lane Stadium. DePaul welcomes Chicago State, UIC, Milwaukee, Northern Illinois and Valparaiso for the meet.
