Blue Demon Throwers Get Things Started During Day One of Dave Rankin Invitational
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The DePaul men’s and women’s track and field teams got the fourth-annual Dave Rankin Invitational underway, competing in the hammer throw Friday evening. Both Melissa Fraser and Virginia MacFabe exceeded BIG EAST Conference Championship qualifying standards, while MacFabe and Alanna Kovacs extended their season-best performances. Fraser was the top finisher for the Blue Demons, placing fourth overall behind a toss of 51.09m. Fraser was followed by MacFabe, who unleashed a season-best throw of 46.27m to take ninth place. Kovacs stretched her personal record to 45.07m, nearly a two meter improvement from her previous PR. The junior came up just shy of the league qualifying distance of 45.12m, but will have one final shot next weekend, we she and the Blue Demons compete at the Drake Relays. Rounding out the marked performances today was Katelyn MacFabe, who recorded a hammer throw of 38.50m. Matt Babicz and Jim Theologes couldn’t quite catch a break today, letting loose some of their farthest throws of the season, but hooking them all just foul. Both will have a chance for redemption tomorrow in the discus throw at 10 a.m. (CST), followed by the shot put at 11 a.m. The Dave Rankin Invitation resumes tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the javelin throw. Running events get underway at noon.
