Track and Field Breaks DePaul 4x100m Record at Purdue



WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Kyra Coffey, Shauna Lurey, Ivy Moffett and Stephanie Williams set a DePaul record in the 4x100m relay on Saturday as the women’s and men’s track and field teams competed at the Purdue Dave Rankin Invitational.  The Blue Demons won five events while recording two NCAA Regional Championship qualifying performances and 13 BIG EAST Championship qualifying marks at the Dave Rankin Track.

Coffey, Lurey, Moffett and Williams passed the baton and took first place in the women’s 4x100m race with a time of 47.03.  The Blue Demon foursome broke the 2007 school record of 47.05 that Coffey and Williams set with Mary Hodges and LaShunta Sanders.

Williams gave DePaul two additional first-place performances on Saturday as she won the 100m dash and 200m dash.  She clocked a 100m time of 11.96 to break through the BIG EAST standard of 12.30.  Williams also surpassed the league’s 200m standard with a time of 24.43.

Gilbert Lifton highlighted the men’s sprinting events when he won the 200m dash with a time of 22.38.  Gabe Harris followed in fourth place with a time of 22.75.

Mary Cate Quiett won the women’s 800m run with a time of 2:11.99, while Allyson Petersen placed second with a time of 2:15.65.  Quiett satisfied the BIG EAST standard of 2:14.04 for the fourth time this season.  Saturday’s middle distance races also saw Claire Duck finish second in the women’s 1,500m run with a time of 4:32.02.  She met the BIG EAST standard of 4:38.44.

The Blue Demons continued to deliver successful performances in field events.  Brad Millar exceeded the NCAA Regional hammer throw standard of 55.60m for the fourth time this season as he placed third with a mark of 59.32m.  Melissa Fraser eclipsed the NCAA Regional javelin standard of 43.45m for the fifth time this season when she covered 45.89m and took second place in the event. 

The women’s hammer throw saw Tammy Burris place second, while Fraser took fifth place and Virginia MacFabe followed in sixth place.  All three Blue Demons broke through the BIG EAST standard of 45.12m as Burris threw 52.06m, Fraser threw 47.37m and MacFabe covered 46.63m.

Burris and Millar recorded additional BIG EAST qualifying performances in the women’s and men’s discus events.  Burris bested the women’s standard of 40.00 as she placed fifth with a 40.90m throw.  Millar surpassed the men’s standard of 42.40m when he threw the discus 44.73m and took sixth place.

Joe Strawder added to his tally of BIG EAST qualifying performances in Saturday’s jumping events.  The Blue Demon sophomore placed second in the long jump with a mark of 7.02m before he took fourth place in the triple jump with a distance of 14.77m.  He met the long jump standard of 6.90m for the fourth time this season and satisfied the triple jump standard of 14.00m for the second time this season.
No team scores were kept at the meet that featured talent from Purdue, Notre Dame, Ball State, Illinois, Grand Valley State, IPFW, Lipscomb, Loyola-Chicago, Tennessee Tech, Idaho and UW-Milwaukee.

DePaul returns to action next weekend at the Drake Relays and Marquette Invitational.  The Blue Demons compete April 24-26 in Des Moines, Iowa and April 25-26 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
