EMU Twilight Concludes With Six Additional BIG EAST Championship Qualifying Marks
YPSILANTI, Mich. The DePaul men’s and women’s track and field squad finished day two of the EMU Twilight with sixth additional BIG EAST Conference Championship meet qualifying marks. Joe Strawder was the top finisher for the men, placing first in the triple jump, while Mary Cate Quiett finished second in the 800m.
Strawder, who recently broke the school record in the triple jump, landed a distance of 14.63m to win the top spot. He also placed third in the long jump with a leap of 6.98m. Both marks exceed the conference standards, currently set at 14.00m and 6.90m, respectively. In the women’s triple jump, Cynthia Edwards improved her season-best mark to 10.80m to place fourth.
Quiett lowered her season-best time in the 800m to 2:10.41. In addition to tallying her second BIG EAST mark in the event this season, she also placed second.
Stephanie Williams continues to be the stand-out sprinter for the women’s squad. With her two conference qualifying marks today in the 100m and 200m, she raises her season total to team-high eight. She placed fourth today in the 100m with a time of 12.17 while finishing third in the 200m after crossing the line at the 24.50 mark.
Alanna Kovacs surpassed the BIG EAST standard in the discus for the second time this season, placing fourth behind a throw of 43.91m. Brad Millar was the top thrower for the Blue Demons today in the javelin. He placed second overall with a distance of 48.87m.
The hammer throw, which was suspended yesterday due to darkness, resumed this morning at 7 a.m. (CST) The throwers opted not to take their final throws, taking their best distances from yesterday to determine the leader board. Millar was the top Blue Demon finisher with an NCAA Regional qualifying throw of 59.31m to place third overall. Virginia MacFabe placed 12th in the women’s competition behind a throw of 41.91m.
Men’s sprinter Gabe Vargas cracked the top-ten in the 100m dash, clocking in at 11.25 to finish in seventh place. Vargas also was the top DePaul finisher in the 200m, with an 11th place time of 22.50.
The men’s 4x100m relay team placed second overall. Tristan Stagger, Gilbert Lifton, Patrick Smith, all passed the baton around to anchor Gabe Harris to cross the finish line at the 42.61 mark.
The Blue Demons return to action on April 25 when they travel to Wisconsin for the Marquette Twilight.
