DePaul Prepares for BIG EAST Championship at Drake and Marquette
CHICAGO - Just one final weekend separates the DePaul men's and women's track and field teams from the 2010 BIG EAST Conference Championship on April 30-May 2. The Blue Demons vie for their final chance to qualify for the league meet at both the Drake Relays on April 22-24 and the Marquette Twilight on April 24.
Twenty-two student athletes to-date have qualified for the BIG EAST Championship in 22 separate events. The Drake Relays, celebrating its 101st year, is one of the United States' largest and longest-running annual meets, and attracts both collegiate and professional talent. Getting things started for DePaul is Stephanie Hughes and Terah Cheatham, who take on the nation's best tomorrow afternoon in the 10,000m and 3,000m steeplechase, respectively. Action continues on Friday morning, when Idia Omogiate, Brittany Lewis, Ivy Moffett and Lindsey Holden collectively race once around the track in the prelims of the 4x100m relay. The quartet recently ran a season-best time of 47.49 at the Dave Rankin Invitational. In addition to 4x100m relay squad, DePaul will rely on the legs of Mary Cate Quiett and Terah Cheatham to carry them through the additional two relays the Blue Demons are scheduled to race in. On the men's side, Max Clink, Chris Kyles, Edin Pasalic and Tonderai Tomu will combine to race in the 4x400m and sprint medley relays. Joe Strawder opens the field events for the Blue Demons, as the senior is slated to compete in the long jump at 1:30 p.m. (CST) Strawder, who currently ranks seventh in the league in the long jump, continues Saturday afternoon in the triple jump. The senior is coming off of a stellar performance last weekend, breaking his own triple jump record and moving up to fourth on the BIG EAST performance list. Other field student-athletes featured for DePaul include Melissa Fraser, Alanna Kovacs, Brad Millar and Tim Nedow, who all rank in the top-30 nationally in their respective events. The remainder of the squad travels to Milwaukee, Wis. on Sat., April 24 for the Marquette Twilight. Field events begin at 11 a.m. with the men's and women's hammer throw while running events commence at 3 p.m. Become a follower on Twitter to receive all the latest news on the DePaul track and field programs, including live updates of this weekend's meet.
