Men's Track & Field Takes Fifth in Champaign

CHICAGO - The DePaul men’s track and field squad took fifth overall this past weekend at the Central Collegiate Championships.  The group totaled 52 points, but the host University of Illinois was too much to handle, racking in 218 points on the day.

Notable performances were turned in by the Blue Demons, including a second place finish by Jamal Cornelious in the 100 meter dash.  Cornelious topped the DePaul best time for the 2005 outdoor season, recording a 10.66 finish in the qualifier and a 10.68 time in the finals.  The previous season best was at 10.70, also held by Cornelious.

Another second place finish went to Richard Byrne who cruised through the 1500 meter run in 4:09.22.

Rashard Deleston landed two third place spots in both the long jump and the triple jump.  In his first long jump competition of the 2005 outdoor season, Deleston posted a distance of 6.93m (22’09.00”).  In three bounds, Deleston made it to 13.84m (45’05.00”).

Webster Jones wrapped up the jumps for the Blue Demons by notching a fifth place finish in the high jump after clearing a height of 1.78m (5’10.00”).

Donnie Smith sprinted his way to a season best in the 200 meter run, taking fourth place in a 22.70 finish.

DePaul will use the week to prepare for a team split at three different meets.  The 111th Penn Relays will take place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the 96th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, over April 28-30.  Closer to home, the North Central Invite will be held on April 29 in Naperville, Illinois.
