Blue Demons Post Solid Numbers Despite Thunderstorms at Marquette Twilight



MILWAUKEE, Wis. The DePaul men’s and women’s track and field squads concluded the Marquette Twilight amidst scattered thunderstorms and erratic temperatures.  Despite the adverse conditions, Terah Cheatham, Kelly Pickering, Brad Millar, and the men’s 4x100m relay team all picked up first place honors in their respective events.

The throwing events were postponed from their original 1 p.m. (CST) start time due to lightning in the area.  Once the all-clear was given, Brad Millar stepped into the ring to launch a hammer throw of 61.03m.  The distance gives the junior his seventh NCAA Regional qualifying throw of the season.  He currently sits at 13th on the 2009 NCAA Division I performance list with his season-best throw of 64.79m.

Virginia MacFabe threw the hammer a distance of 47.02m to earn her second BIG EAST Conference qualifying mark of the season in the event, in addition to placing fourth overall.  Two weeks ago, she surpassed the BIG EAST standard at the Sun Angel Track Classic with a distance of 45.19m. 

Terah Cheatham clocked a first place time of 11:26.42 in the 3,000m steeplechase, lowering her previous personal record by more than 13 seconds. 

In the 5,000m, Matthew Graham led the Blue Demons with a time of 14:57.87 to place second overall.  Jakub Kolacz was the next to cross the finish line, clocking a time of 15:30.52, while Brian Begalke finished at the 16:10.05 mark.  In the women’s 5K, Stephanie Hughes finished in fourth behind a time of 18:45.52.  Kelsey Dolan and Stacey Schmitz each lowered their personal records to 18:54.39 and 19:11.38, respectively.  Clarie O’Brien finished in a time of 19:14.14.

Kelly Pickering earned first place honors in the 800m.  She beat 23 other competitors to the finish line with a time of 2:21.67.  In the men’s 800m, Rob Morgan placed second in the field behind a time of 1:57.11.  Daniel Steinfels lowered his PR to 2:02.71 to finish fifth, while Chris Gallardo clocked a time of 2:08.06 to place ninth.

Tristan Stagger, Gilbert Lifton, Gabe Vargas, and Gabe Harris tallied 10 team-points with their first place finish in the 4x100m relay.  The four-some passed the baton around the track in 42.97 seconds.  Vargas also recorded a t time of 11:30 in the 100m dash to place second overall.

In the men’s 400m, Z Stein placed seventh with a time of 51.55, while Jamil Chammas finished just behind him with a time of 51.61.  Matthew Holland clocked a time of 53:13.  On the women’s side, Laura Wilson posted a time of 1:04.37 to finish in fourth place.

Meredith Klein was the runner-up in the 400m hurdles, clocking a time of 1:08.70.  Lauren Bales contributed a third place time of 1:11.60.

Cynthia Edwards was the top DePaul finisher in the jumps, placing second in the triple jump with a distance of 10.66m.  Brittany Lewis and Ivy Moffett traveled distances of 4.69m and 4.33m, respectively, in the long jump.

The DePaul women placed fifth as a team with 61.50 points.  The men took home fourth with 57 points.  Marquette took the top spot on the podium in both the men’s and women’s competition. 

The Blue Demons return to action on May 1-3 for the BIG EAST Championships in Villanova, Pa.  Thirteen student-athletes have met the league’s qualifying standards in 17 different events.  Stephanie Williams leads the team with eight BIG EAST marks, while two-time conference champion Millar sits on top of the 2009 BIG EAST performance list in the hammer throw.
