CHICAGO – Gearing up for the BIG EAST Conference Championships next weekend, the DePaul track and field team splits up this weekend, with some student-athletes heading to the Drake Relays on Friday and Saturday while others travel to the Purdue Open.

Those Blue Demons traveling to Des Moines, Iowa, include seniors Matthew Graham, Tim Nedow, Melissa Fraser, and Alanna Kovacs, along with sophomore Matt Babicz.

On Friday, Kovacs starts things off for the Blue Demons as she takes on the women’s shot put event at 11:30 a.m. Kovacs continues things with the women’s javelin at 2 p.m. where she is joined by fellow senior Fraser. Fraser currently holds the second-best javelin throw in the nation this season (54.24 meters) while Kovacs owns the ninth-best distance (51.75 meters).

After the DePaul women complete their events, Nedow and Babicz take their turn at the men’s shot put at 2:30 p.m. to conclude the Friday events at the Drake Relays.

The Drake Relays on Saturday will see Nedow compete early in the men’s discus before Graham takes on the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 11:30 a.m.

The remainder of the Blue Demons is set to hold court at the Purdue Open on Friday and Saturday.

DePaul’s only Friday event is the hammer throw at 2 p.m. The women—Jazmyne Durrah, Alexandra Vekich, and Amanda Piche—kick things off before Anthony Babicz and Adam Kovacs compete on the men’s side.

Saturday at the Purdue Open is chock full of events for the Blue Demons. Among field competitions, Durrah, Piche, and Babicz take on the discus throw at 9 a.m. before Durrah and Babicz continue on to the shot put at 11 a.m. Freshman Joe Boesso is scheduled to compete in the men’s high jump at that time as well.

On the track, DePaul sends the 4x100-meter relay squad of Ayesha Ewing, Loreal Curtis, Ashley Holden, and Lindsey Holden for an 11:45 a.m. start. Freshman Jacqueline Kasal will then compete in her second-ever 3,000-meter steeplechase just before noon. Kasal took home first in the event at the DePaul Invitational last weekend in her first collegiate go at it.

The afternoon will see senior Kelly Pickering take on the 1,500-meter run at 12:10 p.m. In the men’s counterpart, Ian Sanchez, Max Rodrigues, Dennis Baliga, and Ben Hiromura are set on the start list.

At 12:30, freshman two-sport standout Sarah Gorden will represent DePaul in the women’s 100-meter hurdles. The women’s 400-meter dash goes off 20 minutes later with Lindsey Holden and Curtis competing. In the men’s 400, Drew Edwards, Robert Davis Jr., Zack Gaskell, Chris Miedema, Joseph Mason, and Tonderai Tomu are scheduled on the starting block.

Just after 1 p.m., freshman Jordon Vaughn is set to run in the 100-meter dash. The 800-meter run follos thereafter with Alexandra Muller and Kelly Pickering competing on the women’s side and Eddie McDaniel, Lucas Junk, and Max Clink competing for the men.

Gorden and Ashley Holden return later for the women’s 400-meter hurdles along with senior Kelcie Daniels and sophomore Rebecca Adamcheck.

The Purdue Open concludes with the women’s and men’s 5,000-meter runs at 1:45 p.m. and 2:05 p.m., respectively. Hannah Pulliam is scheduled to run for DePaul on the women’s side while Herald Alvarez, Brian Begalke, and Zak Koronkiewicz are scheduled for the men.

After both the Drake Relays and Purdue Open conclude, those Blue Demons who have qualified will travel to Tampa, Fla., for the 2012 BIG EAST Conference Outdoor Championships next weekend.
