Three Destinations for Track & Field Weekend

CHICAGO – DePaul’s men’s and women’s track & field squads shake up their routine and split to three different meets this upcoming weekend.  Representatives will be competing in the Penn Relays, the Drake Relays, and the Redbird Invitational.

One of the most storied meets, the Penn Relays, presents its 111th try from April 28-30.  The meet takes place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at Franklin Field.  Each of the DePaul student-athletes competes in their events on Thursday.

Jamie Holifield, Marlene Key, Anthony Becknek, and Donnie Warner will participate for DePaul.  Holifield takes on the hammer throw in the morning, while Becknek, Warner, and Key plan to make it a late night on Thursday.  Becknek will race in the 3000 meter steeplechase and Key and Warner in the 10,000 meter run.

In Des Moines, Iowa, the annual Drake Relays will kick off events on Friday and continue through Saturday at Drake Stadium.  At the world-renowned event that many call “America’s Athletic Classic,” 62 foreign countries and 28 states have representatives in the field of teams.

Eleven Blue Demon competitors will be part of the 8,176 athletes representing 752 teams participating in the 96th running of the Drake Relays.  Events begin at 8:00 a.m. on both days.

Three DePaul relay teams, including the women’s 4x200m, women’s 4x400m, and men’s sprint medley team, will race.  Kayla Burks and Gavin Kennedy will be the only individual participants, taking part in the high jump and 1500 meter run, respectively.

The final group of DePaul tracksters head down to Normal, Illinois, for the Redbird Invitational.  The all-day meet hosted by Illinois State University takes place on Saturday, April 30.

The men’s and women’s hammer throw start off the day at 9:00 a.m., while the running events do not begin until 11:30 a.m. beginning with the men’s and women’s 5000 meter run.

Following the weekend, the Blue Demons travel to Indianapolis, Indiana, to participate in the Stan Lyons Twilight on May 5-6.  The meet is hosted by Butler University but will take place at Indiana University Michael A. Carroll Track and Field Stadium.
