Quiett Awarded Final BIG EAST Athlete of the Week Honor of the Season
CHICAGO - For the second time this season, and third of her career, junior Mary Cate Quiett of the DePaul women's track and field team was selected as the BIG EAST Conference Track Athlete of the Week as announced today by the league office. Quiett set two records last weekend at the Drake Relays, one in the 800m and another in the sprint medley relay.
Quiett, a junior hailing from Mishawaka, Ind., has made breaking records a routine this season. During the indoor campaign, she reset her own record in 1,000m during the first race of the season, lowered her 800m all-time best on three occasions, and added the 4x400m relay record to her resume. In the first outdoor race of the season, the 49er Classic, Quiett clocked a 2:06.87 to break her previous career-best mark of 2:08.24. Quiett followed up that performance, which earned her athlete of the week accolades, with a win in the 800m at the Raleigh Relays, followed by a sixth-place showing in the 800m at the Sun Angel Track Classic. Last weekend at the Drake Relays, Quiett proved once again that she is a force to be reckoned with as she shaved another tenth of a second off of her record performance. Her time of 2:06.77 is the 18th-fastest time in the nation, while it extends her lead amongst BIG EAST student-athletes by over half a second. In the sprint medley relay, she combined with Lindsey Holden, Idia Omogiate and Ivy Moffett to set her second record of the weekend. Quiett now has her name inked next to nine school records, the most of any one student-athlete whose name currently appears on the all-time best list. Hall of Fame runner Jim Fox and Erin Moffett rank second with six records still intact, while current assistant coaches Dave Dopek and Stephanie Williams, and each hold five. Quiett is one of three student-athletes who enter this weekend's BIG EAST Championship as the favorite. Brad Millar ranks No. 1 in the hammer throw by 8.35m (27' 4"), while Melissa Fraser holds the top seed in the javelin throw over teammate Alanna Kovacs by an inch. Championship action gets underway on Friday, April 30 with the combined events, while the Blue Demons open competition at 8 a.m. (CST) Saturday morning. Closing ceremonies are scheduled for 1:50 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
