Strawder Delivers NCAA Qualifying Long Jump at Illinois State

NORMAL, Ill. – Joe Strawder posted an NCAA Regional qualifying performance in the men’s long jump on Saturday as a select squad from the men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Illinois State Redbird Classic.  The Blue Demons notched two more BIG EAST Championship qualifying marks and won two events at the ISU Track.

 

Strawder cleared a distance of 7.44m to win the long jump and exceed the NCAA Regional standard of 7.34m.  In addition, he set a meet record by eclipsing the 2004 mark of 7.21m posted by Terry Nurse of Northwest Missouri State.  Strawder also placed second in the men’s triple jump with a season-best distance of 14.44m.  He has surpassed the BIG EAST qualifying standard of 13.36m in three meets this season.

 

The men’s shot put saw Curtis Hoag deliver a season-best 15.23m throw to finish fourth.  He exceeded the BIG EAST standard of 14.63m for the fourth time this season.

 

Scott Cooper won the men’s 800m run with a time of 1:55.45.  Greg Udzielak followed in ninth place with a time of 1:59.45 and Nick Schaefer finished 14th with a time of 2:00.63.

 

Ivy Moffett took second place in the women’s 100m dash with a season-best time of 12.35, while Terah Cheatham finished third in the women’s 5,000m run with a time of 18:57.14.

 

No team scores were kept at the meet that featured competition from BIG EAST rival Marquette in addition to Eastern Illinois, Northern Illinois, Western Illinois, Southern Illinois-Carbondale, Olivet Nazarene, St. Louis, Illinois Wesleyan, Washington University, Illinois, Millikin and Bradley.

 

DePaul heads to Storrs, Connecticut next weekend for the 2007 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships.  The Blue Demons compete against the league’s best on Saturday and Sunday at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
